Offline AI chat setup: what to check before downloading the model

Why an offline chat app needs an initial download

A local AI model is the file the app uses to generate replies on your phone. The Whispering Diary downloads its Qwen model directly from Hugging Face over HTTPS and checks the file before use. The download service can process technical request details such as your IP address, file requested, and time.

After setup, ordinary conversations run locally. This distinction matters when comparing offline AI chat apps: ask which stage needs a connection and which information travels over it, rather than assuming offline means no network request ever.

Prepare storage and a connection

1. Check available device storage before beginning.
2. Use a connection suitable for a large download and check any mobile-data limits.
3. Follow the app’s setup prompts and let its file check finish.
4. Try a short, non-sensitive conversation while setup is complete.
5. Disconnect from the network and confirm that an ordinary conversation works on your installed version.

The approximately 805 MB figure is the model file, not a promise that the whole app fits within that space. Leave additional room for the installed app, conversations, and normal device operation. Exact free-space requirements and generation speed depend on the app and device; this guide does not give an unverified RAM or speed guarantee.

If setup does not complete

Read the error shown by the app before retrying. Check the connection and free storage first. A failed download is not proof that you must erase conversations or reinstall the app. If the error persists, contact support with the error text and device details, avoiding private diary entries.

Do not substitute a random model file merely because it has a similar name. Compatibility and file checks matter. This guide does not promise resumable downloads, manual model import, or support for arbitrary models.

Understand what remains on your phone

Conversations, drafts, approved memories, preferences, and response flags are stored privately on the device and excluded from automatic Android cloud backup. Optional diary lock uses Android biometric or screen-lock controls; the app does not receive your fingerprint or device PIN.

Removing the downloaded model preserves conversations, but the model is needed to generate ordinary local replies. Uninstalling removes local app data. Export anything you want to keep before uninstalling, and consider the storage practices of the export destination. Elias is a fictional character for adults; replies can be inaccurate and are not professional or emergency advice.

Separate downloading, loading, and generating a reply

These are three different stages. Downloading transfers the model file to storage. Loading prepares the model for use in working memory. Generating uses that model to produce a reply. Having space for an approximately 805 MB download does not establish a phone’s available RAM or guarantee a particular reply speed.

If setup fails while transferring the file, record the download error and check connection and storage. If the file check finishes but opening chat fails, record that later stage instead of assuming the download must be repeated. If chat opens but a reply fails, note whether the failure happens for a short, non-sensitive test message too.

When contacting support, include the phone model, Android version, app version, stage, and exact error text. Do not send private diary entries to demonstrate the problem. Hugging Face’s model-loading documentation explains the general distinction between saved model weights and memory used to load them; it is not a compatibility specification for The Whispering Diary.

Are my diary entries sent during the model download?

No. The model download request does not include diary entries. Hugging Face may process technical information needed to deliver the file.

Does removing the model delete conversations?

The current app preserves conversations when you remove the downloaded model. Uninstalling is different and removes local app data.

Can I use the app for emergency or professional advice?

No. The Whispering Diary is adult fictional entertainment. Its small local model can generate inaccurate responses.
